Mumbai in Reel Life.Bollywood loves to show off its home city. But only few films have been able to reveal the soul of the city. Here are few that have succeeded.
1. Wake Up Sid
What we loved the most in the Wake Up Sid was not Ranbir or Konkona’s performance but the depictions of Mumbai in the film. Whether the scenes of Marine Drive where we could almost feel the sea’s spray or Ranbir’s many photography jaunts, the film showed us a Mumbai which we often ignore and walk by, but is undeniably beautiful.
2. Dhobi Ghat
Kiran Rao’s directorial debut showcases Mumbai in all its moods. The rains are furious, the colours are vibrant and the crowds are teeming. And yet like the characters, the film also reveals a softer, gentler side of the city, especially in the sequences where Monica Dogra visits Prateik Babbar.
3. The Lunchbox
The Mumbai shown in The Lunchbox is the one you and me experience every day. It includes the dabbawalas, the packed locals, the sarkari offices and the cramped living spaces.
4. Life…In a Metro
In a city of millions, Life…In a Metro showed us how we can still be lonely. From its lingering shots of the Mumbai skyline to its halting traffic, ‘Metro’ showed us a less-colourful and yet soulful Mumbai. Our favourite is the iconic scene between Shiney Ahuja and Shilpa Shetty in a crowded local train, showing how Mumbaikars can steal romantic moments, even in crowded trains
